under this year, and the relaunch plan reads as a sourcing brief for roof top tent suppliers.
What the Brand Announced
Overland Expo published an interview with founder Bobby Culpepper on 16 September. The brand, known as CVT, was sold in 2022 and repurchased by its founder in 2026.
The stated direction is specific. Lower profile hard shell designs, improved mattresses and cleaner accessory integration head the list.
The relaunch also promises a rebuilt ecosystem covering awnings, accessories and replacement parts. Culpepper noted that the outdoor industry has become expensive and pointed to competitive pricing as a goal.
Why a Relaunch Is a Supply Signal
A brand returning to its founder is usually a sign that the previous owner lost focus or margin. Rebuilding it means re-sourcing, because a relaunch with old tooling and a stale catalogue rarely wins shelf space.
The three product priorities map onto supplier capability. A lower profile hard shell needs new tooling and a tighter shell design. A better mattress means a different foam specification. Cleaner accessory integration means brackets and channels designed as a system rather than added later.
The parts promise is the most interesting item. Replacement parts across a product range require a supplier that can produce a bracket or a hinge years after the initial order, which is a different capability from one-off manufacturing.
The Hard Shell Design Problem
A lower profile hard shell reduces wind resistance on the road and drag related fuel use. The engineering cost is internal volume.
Solving it means a smarter internal layout. A wedge shape gives headroom at one end, and an internal frame that supports the mattress without stealing space is the usual answer.
Material choice sits at the centre. An aluminium shell roof top tent is lighter and holds its shape better than a plastic shell, and it takes a powder coat finish that survives UV exposure.
An ABS shell roof top tent offers a lower tooling cost at volume and a shape that moulds more freely. The trade off is weight and a greater sensitivity to temperature extremes.
Attachment and Awning Integration
Most relaunch programmes pair the tent with an awning. That pairing is where integration quality shows.
A 270 degree free standing awning deploys across the vehicle side and rear without additional poles in light wind. Getting it to work with the tent means the mounting brackets are designed together rather than adapted.
A car side awning is the simpler case, and it remains the volume product for casual campervan and SUV use. Buyers should check the mounting rail standard, because a non standard rail limits the vehicle range the awning can serve.
The mounting hardware carries the real load. Roof bars have stated dynamic and static limits, and an awning plus tent combination is closer to those limits than either item alone.
Fabric and Weather Performance
Fabric decides how a tent performs in the second season, not the first. A coated ripstop with a high hydrostatic head rating sheds a sustained downpour, and a taped seam is as important as the coating.
Ventilation is the second factor. Condensation inside a closed hard shell is the most common customer complaint, and it is solved by vents and a breathable inner layer rather than by more waterproofing.
Zips and windows are the third. A covered zip reduces water ingress and extends zip life, and a midge screen matters in the northern markets where the product sells best.
Ordering for a Relaunch
Three commercial points decide whether a relaunch ships on schedule. Tooling lead time, a firm sample schedule and a parts commitment.
Tooling for a new hard shell is the long pole, and a brand that approves a design in the autumn should expect the first containers in the following season rather than the same one.
Sampling should be locked to a schedule with named milestones. A relaunch that slips a season loses the retail placement it was built for.
The parts commitment is the item a relaunch brand most often forgets. A supplier that agrees to hold bracket and hinge tooling, and to supply spares for a defined period, protects the brand's after sales reputation more than a lower unit price does.
